How to Prevent Panic Attacks

If you suffer from panic attacks there are several methods that you can use to help {stop them.  ~If you experience panic attacks there are methods that you can learn that will help stop them.  }The key to controlling your panic attacks is to confront your fear and feel as though you want to experience a panic attack.  This will help reduce the power that the fear has over you and can stop a panic attack before it has even begun.  This might not sound like a very good idea but it does work.  It’s the fear of something that draws the panic towards you.  So shift your awareness away from the fear and instead focus on wanting to experience another panic attack.  When you want to experience a panic attack it reduces the level of fear and so the panic will subside.

A panic attack is the result of being in a fearful situation where you feel that you have no control over what is happening to you.  It’s the perceived lack of control that brings on the panic attack.  Some people who have panic attacks will avoid fearful situations but this is no solution as it just causes the fear to persist.  You have to confront the fear in order to overcome the fear.  This will probably be very scary for you but with repeated exposure the fear will start to diminish.

Associating past events that were traumatic for you with what is occurring in the here and now can often trigger panic attacks.  So try and maintain your focus in the present by taking your mind off what has happened in the past or your worries about the future.  You can help to maintain your focus in the present moment by paying attention to your surroundings.  Notice the colours and pay attention to the sounds and smells.  Try touching objects to experience how they feel or stroke an animal. 

You can calm your mind with the aid of aromatherapy oils such as lavender.  They are good to carry with you if you suffer from anxiety.  There is a great natural aid for anxiety and it is called “Rescue Remedy” which is a Bach Flower essence and can be purchased in health food stores.

Keeping an anxiety journal is a good idea where you write notes about the things that you most fear.  Next to all the things that your find fearful you should write down something that would calm that fear.  When you find yourself in one of these situations again, try repeating these calming things to yourself.
